Importing a Motorcycle into Ireland
Importing a motorcycle into Ireland involves a specific sequence of customs declarations, tax payments, and registration steps. You must book an appointment with the National Car Testing Service (NCTS) within 7 days of the bike’s arrival and complete the full registration within 30 days.
- From the EU: No customs duty is required. However, you must pay 23% VAT if the motorcycle is “new” (less than 6 months old or has covered less than 6,000 km).
- From Great Britain (GB): Since Brexit, imports from GB are treated as coming from a non-EU country. You must complete an electronic Customs Declaration before the bike arrives, pay 10% Customs Duty (unless it qualifies for preferential origin), and pay 23% VAT.
- From Northern Ireland (NI): If the bike was previously registered and used in NI for a reasonable period, it can typically be registered without additional VAT or Customs Duty, provided you have proof of its NI history.
Every imported motorcycle must pay VRT (Category M) based on its engine size.
- Calculation: €2.00 per cc for the first 350cc, and €1.00 per cc for every unit thereafter.
- Depreciation: The total amount is reduced based on the bike’s age. For example, bikes over 10 years old receive a 90% discount, and those over 30 years old are exempt from VRT charges (flat €200 fee may apply).
- Electric Motorcycles: These are currently exempt from VRT until 31 December 2025.
- Foreign Registration Document: The original logbook (e.g., UK’s V5C).
- Invoice/Bill of Sale: Must show the purchase date and VIN.
- Customs Reference: The Master Reference Number (MRN) from your customs declaration (for non-EU/GB imports).
- PPS Number and Identity: Proof of your PPS number and a valid ID (passport or driving licence).
- Proof of Address: A utility bill or bank statement no older than 6 months.
- Registration Plates: Once registered, you will be assigned an Irish registration number which must be displayed within 3 days.
- Motor Tax: Apply for motor tax via MotorTax.ie using the RF100 form provided by the NCTS.
- Insurance: You must have valid Irish insurance to drive on public roads.
