Garda Motorcycling

1. Become a Garda
  • Join An Garda Síochána: You must pass the entry requirements to become a Garda Trainee, which includes a 104-week training program culminating in a BA Degree in Applied Policing.
  • Initial Service: After training, you will be assigned to a station and must work as a regular Garda, gaining experience on the road

2. Move to Roads Policing Unit

  • Apply for Specialization: You must apply to join the Roads Policing Unit, which operates police cars and motorcycles.
  • Requirements: A clean disciplinary record and strong driving ability are necessary.

3. Specialized Motorcycle Training

  • Standard Training: If accepted, you will undergo rigorous training at the Garda College, focusing on advanced machine control, traffic management, and emergency response driving.
  • Advanced Training: After gaining experience as a standard Garda motorcyclist, officers can undertake advanced training to become a Class 1 police motorcyclist, which involves expert-level riding and hazard management.

  • This is a national police-led safety scheme launched in 2023 across Ireland.
  • It involves a workshop and an observed ride conducted by an advanced Garda motorcyclist.
